Glaucoma is a group of conditions in which optic nerve cells in the back of the eye die.  This is usually due to excessive intraocular pressure inside the eye exerted by fluid known as aqueous humor.  The function of these optic nerve cells is to transform the light entering the eye into electronic impulses for the brain to understand.  As these cells slowly die, then some vision may be lost.  High intraocular pressure is not always dangerous, however in susceptible individuals high pressure can begin to damage the optic nerve.  Glaucoma is a painless disease that can cause permanent damage before ever noticing a difference in your vision.  Glaucoma is a treatable disease but unfortunately at this time, there is no cure.

A thorough dilated examination which takes into account intraocular pressure, family background, visual field and condition of the optic nerve will enable our team of doctors to asses whether or not glaucoma is present.

People who are likely to develop glaucoma include those who:

• are related to someone with glaucoma
• have diabetes
• have high blood pressure
• are taking steroid medications
• are over the age of 50
• are of African descent
